Your “why don’t I sound better yet?” chapter ends here

Bow Arm Bootcamp™ is your clear, step-by-step path to reliable, tension-free bow arm technique…

So you can start pulling a richer, more beautiful sound from your cello.

No more second-guessing. Or piecing together advice from lessons, YouTube videos, or trial-and-error.

Just a complete roadmap for what to work on, in what order, and what to listen for — so you can stop hunting for answers and start hearing real improvement in your sound.

ENROLLMENT IS NOW OPEN FOR …

Bow Arm Bootcamp™

Think of it as the bow arm instruction you wish you’d had from the beginning: every fundamental placed in sequence, every step clearly explained, and nothing left for you to piece together alone.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU focused on building a free ergonomic bow arm?

If you let go of thinking of harder repertoire or advancing grade levels as progress and believed you could actually improve your sound?

CAN YOU IMAGINE…

Enjoying how you sound as you draw the bow and play your favorite piece

By harnessing the natural mechanics of your bow arm

Playing fluid, legato musical lines with consistency

By channeling free arm movement and learning to listen actively

Shaping musical contour within one bow stroke

By distributing the bow effectively

Learning how to play fast with less tension

By improving left and right hand coordination

Executing precise, seamless string crossings

By learning how to correctly transfer weight using the smaller muscles in your fingers

Actually hearing musical lines in your playing

By learning how to phrase towards or away from notes using bow distribution

Here’s the truth

If you’re feeling stuck, it’s your bow arm.

If you’re feeling like you don’t *SOUND* like you're progressing on cello, it’s your bow arm.

(And not because you’re untalented, or you started too late…
Or because you just need to “practice more.”)

You don’t need more effort — you just need a better system…

30 step-by-step video lessons.
4 focused modules.
18+ hours of video content.
A complete bow arm training sequence.

Not a random collection of bowing exercises.

It’s my own methodology, organized into a 30-lesson arc designed specifically for adult learners — so each concept builds on the last, and every step prepares you for the next.

MODULE 1

Beautiful Sound Mechanics

7 VIDEO LESSONS, ~30 MINUTES EACH

We're building a foundation of free and ergonomic bow arm mechanics by exploring how your arm generates momentum, leverage, and weight—the essential ingredients for producing a rich, resonant tone on the cello. We’ll dive into:

  • Bow hand flexibility exercises

  • The different angles needed to pull rich sound on all strings + parts of the bow

  • How to maximize our potential through the most naturally resonant notes on each string (training our ears)

  • Using a series of fast bow strokes to help you discover free movement and richer sound

MODULE 2

Seamless String Crossings

7 VIDEO LESSONS, ~30 MINUTES EACH

We’re taking everything we learned in Week 1 into string crossings week and learning the opening of Bach’s famous G Major Prelude. We’ll work on:

  • Finding and exploring the most efficient bow stroke for transitioning between strings

  • How to transfer weight smoothly using the smaller muscle groups and fingers

  • Mastering slurred and separate bows on string crossings

  • Mapping out in a 3-D plane what your hand, bow, arm should feel ergonomically

MODULE 3

Fast playing

7 VIDEO LESSONS, ~30 MINUTES EACH

We learn how to develop a short, fast bow stroke without adding any physical tension, and how to pair it with a crisp, sprightly left hand. We’ll explore how to:

  • Create fast bow strokes from the same foundation we built in Weeks 1 & 2 so that we’re not sacrificing sound for speed

  • Group notes in the left hand to help our bow hand

  • Pulse the right hand for added clarity and speed

  • Practice slowly in the correct way so that you don’t lose all the tone and clarity you developed once you speed things up

MODULE 4

Bow Distribution, Musicality, and Shifting

9 VIDEO LESSONS, ~30 MINUTES EACH

In this very exciting final ‘week’ of 9 days, I’ll be showing you how to sound more musical and expressive as we learn the gorgeous melody of Mendelssohn’s “On Wings of Song!” You’ll learn the nuances needed to create smooth left hand shifts and also discover how simple bow distribution can greatly enhance musicality. We’ll dive into:

  • How to practice shifts with the bow so that they become reliable and smooth as butter

  • How to shift with the left hand so that you never feel rushed (“slow is fast!”)

  • The art of phrasing towards or away from notes and how to achieve that with your bow

MY PROMISE TO YOU?

Put the time into this course, and you won’t have to spend the years I did trying to piece together bow arm technique from scattered advice and trial-and-error.

CHRISTINE KORDEL | ★★★★★

“My [private] teacher has gone on and on about my improvement. If it is at all possible for you to take this course I wholeheartedly recommend it.”

JACKIE FINLAY | ★★★★★

“My cello group has noticed that my playing has improved. For me that was a big WOW.”

What if life gets in the way and I can’t keep up?

You’ll receive lifetime access to the course, monthly live masterclasses + all future updates at no extra cost.

This isn’t something you have to rush through once and “complete.”

You can work through Bow Arm Bootcamp™ at your own pace, revisit the lessons whenever you need a reset, and keep coming back to the material as your playing develops.

+ BONUSES

#1: Ongoing live monthly masterclasses

VALUE: $1200+

Every month, you’ll be invited to attend a live, hour-long Zoom masterclass hosted by myself and attended by your fellow students. These sessions are completely optional, so you can drop in whenever it’s helpful and skip them when life gets busy.

As you continue your cello journey, these masterclasses provide ongoing guidance, accountability, and personalized support.

#2: Mastering Smooth Bow Changes (mini-course)

VALUE: $350

4 in-depth videos focused entirely on one of the most frustrating (and transformational) aspects of bow technique.

Inside this mini-course, you’ll learn:

• The one guiding principle that demystifies smooth bow changes
• How to use collé to build the finger flexibility required for seamless direction changes
• A clear, step-by-step breakdown of the “paintbrush” technique

By the end of this training, you will understand the role of the bow arm and fingers in executing buttery smooth bow changes.

#3: Study Guides

VALUE: $80

Printable packets that contain everything you need to attack each week: Sheet music, exercises explained, and all bowing principles further illuminated with helpful graphics and analogies for further study off the cello.

These pieces may eventually come together…

But it would likely be a longer, harder, more frustrating road.

Trying different advice, troubleshooting tension, or wondering why your sound still doesn’t feel the way you want it to feel.

That was me for years, too.

I had incredible teachers and even went back to school for cello performance.

But I still had to do the deeper work of translating all of that information into a clear, repeatable bow arm methodology that actually worked in my adult body.

That’s what I’ve laid out for you inside Bow Arm Bootcamp™.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a few months or a few years in…

You can develop a more comfortable, more intentional way of playing that helps your sound finally begin to reflect the work you’re putting in.

I know because I had to build this for myself.

And the process is even faster with my private students, because I can share with them in minutes what took me years to figure out.

DAKOTA ADAN | ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

“From my first lesson with Billy’s method, my sound was SOO different.”

“Not only do you start to play music and make sounds you appreciate hearing, but it doesn't feel like a wrestle…I began using my body in a way that wasn't fighting the instrument anymore. It actually started to feel enjoyable."

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Meet Billy -

Hi there!

If we haven’t officially met or connected online, I’m Billy Tobenkin. I started my cello journey at age 25 and am now a professional cellist, online educator, and expert in teaching adult learners.

I am proud to say that 1200+ students

Although I’m serious about your success, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy ourselves along the way. My teaching is infused with positivity, a little bit of humor, and (so I’ve been told) REALLY helpful, fun analogies (this is where my earlier degree in Creative Writing from Cornell University comes in handy).

For adult learners, I’ve found that a good analogy can instantly unlock the kind of understanding that leads to those precious “a-ha” moments.

“My passion is helping adults realize not only that they can start cello, but that beautiful sound is within reach from DAY ONE.”‍ ‍

MY LETTER TO YOU:

I emphasize sound from Day 1 with my students because I myself nearly called it quits on 3-4 separate occasions.

At a certain point, years into my journey, I realized I needed to change my whole approach to learning cello. I could no longer rely on my old routines, practice habits, and mindset to take me as far as I wanted to go.

Since I have been in this exact place (many times) and pushed through to the other side, I want to share some information that I had to learn the hard way:

When it comes to climbing to new heights on your cello journey, there are multiple paths up the mountain. And choosing to take the longer, slower route doesn’t earn you extra points…it just takes longer. And unlike a real, physical mountain with all of its inherent physical danger to a climber, the mountain I’m talking about poses no threat to anyone who chooses the steeper, faster route.

So what I’m trying to say is that you can do this.

It can be scary to let go of preconceived notions - about the endeavor itself and especially about your own capabilities (and limitations). And climbing the steeper route up that mountain will require more concentration, experimentation, and creativity.

But it’s guaranteed to be more exhilarating!

The methodology I teach inside Bow Arm Bootcamp™ isn’t tied to one specific stage of the cello journey.

It’s the foundation behind better sound.

These are the concepts that help you build reliable technique early on…

And the same concepts you’ll return to again and again as you grow into more advanced repertoire.

So if your sound still feels inconsistent, tense, or not as rich as you want it to be, Bow Arm Bootcamp™ gives you the path to change that — by rebuilding the bow arm mechanics behind a freer, more beautiful sound.

WHAT PAST STUDENTS ARE SAYING

"Billy's style of teaching is very unique and specifically tailored to adult learners and our intrinsic body/mindset limitations.”

I got much more through his online teaching, than with a regular 1-on-1 teaching with a local teacher who doesn't grasp what I am facing as a 40+ beginner."

— ELODIE P | ★★★★★

"Billy has been available and responsive to questions which is important as I think he really cares that the course is working for people.”

“He is not just trying to sell it and move on, he has invested time and effort in his customers and that is quite unusual for web based training."

— SARAH C | ★★★★★

"I started with an in-person teacher and received no specific feedback. She played along with me and said that I sounded better. I didn't.”

“With this course, sound has greatly improved."

— BETTE B | ★★★★★

"What I like best about Billy’s cello instruction is that he is especially focused on avoiding physical discomfort while learning the instrument.”

“Amazingly, with his guidance, I have had no soreness, stiffness, or discomfort of any kind while working with the cello."

FAQs

  • Right away! You can start the first lesson the moment you enroll.

Or you can wait to start the course whenever you have time.

  • At all times, year-round, for the lifetime of the course. This includes all 30 video lessons, study guides, and bonus materials, as well as masterclass replays.

By joining now, you’re locking in your lifetime access, and the Bootcamp will be waiting for you whenever you’re ready to get started.

  • The 30 sequential cello lessons are divided into 4 modules. Each module I introduce and practice with you new concepts, techniques and exercises.

I have curated and designed the concepts that are essential to understanding and executing bow arm mechanics, in the exact order I wish I could have experienced myself.

Each lesson is designed to continuously build upon what we have previously covered, reinforcing what we have just learned while continuing to push ahead.

This way, we are building in consistent and reliable technique with each day.

  • All course materials are hosted on Teachable.com, a 3rd party platform.

You do not need a Facebook account to access any course materials.

My live monthly masterclasses take place via Zoom.us. You will receive a Zoom meeting link via email every month in order to participate in the masterclass.

    • Any adult learners who are unsatisfied with their sound and need help with bow arm mechanics + technique.

    • Graduates of my beginner cello course: Cello in 30 Days™.

    • Goal-oriented students — While each lesson builds step-by-step, weekly milestones create tangible progress that will keep you motivated.

    • Students who are motivated but need flexibility and/or structure — Many adults find it difficult to schedule time for regular in-person lessons. Bow Arm Bootcamp™ provides the structure and needed flexibility to take a lesson day or night while sticking to a prescribed program.

  • Yes, if:

You are comfortable in first position and have some knowledge of the lower neck positions up to 4th position.

You have working a bow grip.

    You can read bass clef.

If you have completed my first course, Cello in 30 Days™, you’re ready.

  • Yes, if you are not currently satisfied with your sound.

And sound is the one thing that will make you sound less advanced.

I too felt unsatisfied with my sound years into my journey. Even though I had great instruction, I wasn’t getting all the pieces I needed (as an adult learner) to build in reliable bow arm technique.

So what I feel you'll most benefit from are the proven exercises I've developed to help adult students learn technique and sound production simultaneously. Chances are that if you're having trouble making a consistent, high quality sound on cello, you are not yet utilizing the bow arm correctly.

  • Truthfully, this part is up to you.

You can choose to complete a lesson a day and finish in 30 days, or progress through the course at a more moderate pace by doubling or tripling up on each lesson. At that pace, I’d suggest setting aside 3-5 hours per week to follow along with the lessons and complete your own practice.

At just 30-40 minutes in length, it's easy to fit in meaningful time on the cello most days of the week. And because I have designed each lesson to build upon the last, you'll always be making progress and moving forward.

And honestly, life just gets in the way sometimes. With lifetime access, you can return and start back up right where you left off.

    This isn’t a one-and-done kind of course.

Students will come back again and again throughout their journeys to re-establish what they learned in the Bootcamp.

  • Tech-wise, you only need two things to complete the course successfully:

    A solid internet connection.

A laptop, desktop computer, or iPad/tablet to stream the course content.

Other than that, just your cello and cello bow (plus accessories like rosin, a rockstop and music stand).

All sheet music is provided in the course as pdf files to print or download onto your computer or tablet.

  • Every month, I will be available via Zoom to answer your questions + give constructive feedback your playing.

The masterclasses take place live once a month on a weekday. (I purposely change up the time of the calls to try to hit students in a variety of time zones.)

And don’t worry, if you can't join them live for any reason, you can always pre-submit questions and watch the replay for your answers.

The exact date and time of each month's call will be emailed to you at least a week in advance.

You will also get lifetime access to watch all past and future masterclasses inside the course.

  • Yes, you will most certainly benefit from the lessons in this course if you are not currently satisfied with your sound.

This was my own experience: Even though I was getting great instruction from weekly lessons, I wasn’t getting all the pieces I needed (as an adult learner) to build in reliable bow arm technique.

So what I feel you'll most benefit from are the proven exercises I've developed to help adult students learn technique and sound production simultaneously. Chances are that if you're having trouble making a consistent, high quality sound on cello, you are not yet utilizing the bow arm correctly.

  • All the video content within the course is pre-recorded and on-demand for you to watch day or night. This is not a 1-on-1 private teaching program.

However, I will be available on a monthly basis to answer your questions + give constructive feedback on your playing during our monthly Zoom Q&A Masterclass calls.

Also, keep in mind that because my private teaching studio is full, enrolling in my course is truly the best and only way to study with me.

  • Yes, I want you to be 100% satisfied with the course.

If you feel it’s not right for you, just shoot us an email at billy@adultcello.com within 7 days of purchase. In a quick phone call or Zoom session, just let us know how we can improve the course! You’ll receive a full refund of the purchase price.

  • We do address the left hand in Bow Arm Bootcamp™. Left hand techniques we cover include:

    • “Guitar chords” and tunnel fingers (in the Bach G Major prelude in Week 2)

    • Shifting (and how to coordinate shifting with the bow)

    • Grouping notes in the left hand while pulsing with the bow in fast playing during Module 3

But to be clear, most people don’t struggle with the left hand as they do the bow arm.

The basics of playing notes with the left hand or learning the fingerboard are things that are guaranteed to improve as you put more time in.

So what I’ve included in the Bootcamp are some of the stickier, less obvious aspects of left hand technique that affect bow technique (and making a gorgeous sound).

  • No, sorry -- our system doesn’t allow us to offer the bundle discount at a later date.

  • Cello in 30 Days™ is the ultimate beginner level course for adult learners.

It’s what I would call the “101” course for adult learners who are either just beginning their journeys or coming back to it after a long break.

In Cello in 30 Days™, you will learn basic setup, cello anatomy, and how to hold your cello and bow. I’ll introduce pizzicato and bowing, slurs, left hand extensions, and shifting, as well.

In terms of the left hand, we cover all the lower neck positions up to 4th position.

If any of these seem concepts or techniques seem wholly unfamiliar, I would start with Cello in 30 Days™.

That being said, the only ‘prerequisite’ knowledge to successfully follow along with the methodology in Bow Arm Bootcamp™ a working bow hand and being able to read and play in first position.
